Getting Our Garden Together

For the last two days we have been putting together our new vegetable garden in the back yard. We didn't arrive in Killeen until late June last year, so that was a little too late to start one. In Muleshoe, we had a little vegetable garden and really enjoyed it so we are really looking forward to those yummy treats again this summer.
My parents came to help with our project. Since the soil is so rocky and hard here, my dad built us a great raised bed for our veggies. They have several of these that he has built at their house and it seemed like the best way to go.
We have planted tomatoes, peppers, squash and cucumbers. I couldn't seem to get a pepper to grow in Muleshoe, if anyone has any tips for growing them down here, I would love to hear them.
Benjamin really enjoyed helping me plant everything this morning and Jonathan enjoyed sticking the dirt in his nose.
If anyone can name the movie and speaker for the following quote, I'll try to (in some way shape or form) get some tomatoes to ya this summer:
"...because I'm a southern woman and we're supposed to wear funny hats and ugly clothes and grow vegetables in the dirt..."
(This is my all time favorite movie!)

Steel Magnolias was my guess too. Great movie! Good luck with your garden, I love the raised bed idea.

My mom always gardened when she lived here and grew peppers, but I have no idea what her 'secret' was, lol.

I wanted to let you know that I e-mailed you this evening. 5A keeps sending it back to me because they think I'm sending spam (grumble... this isn't the first time) so if you didn't get it please let me know! Talk to you soon.

I'll have to get some gardening tips from you. This was my first year to plant so we'll see how it goes. So far my basil is doing outstanding. I heard that it grows well here all summer. If you like fresh basil you ought to give it a try. I like it so much better than the dried stuff. It's just a totally different flavor.

I believe that's Ouiser's quote from SM as mentioned above.

We did the same raised beds when we lived in K-Town. They worked nicely except one spring when a hail storm destroyed all of our plants.

We also grow peppers every year, and the only problem we have ever had is what to do with all of them. We have done bell, jalapeno, and cayenne. Hope everything grows well! I can't wait until our tomatoes and squash are ready!

Oh. And did you know that PW and you have the same b-day?

Okay, okay. So the last comment from David was actually from Kristi. If the man would LOGOUT, he wouldn't have looked like the world's biggest Steel Magnolias fan!

Thanks for the clarification on "my" comment about Steel Magnolias. I am chock full of quotes from O, Brother, Where Art Thou? and The Blues Brothers, if anyone is interested.

Oh Brother Where Art Thou? Is he still in love with that movie? How many times did we endure that torture? Too funny! I am impressed with your gardening skillz and hope mother earth will be kind to your veggies.
Best of Luck! ;)

I was going to guess SM, too, but it looks like I'm not the first one! Great garden - can't wait to see how it grows - and taste some of it!!!

I assumed that you knew Syndi's and Arly's dates were the 16th of their respective months and wondered if you were going to make it 3 for 3.!

Oh, Shellie! You make me laugh! Jonathan will always be our youngest child!

Melanie, you know us so well!
Thanks everyone for all of the fun comments and for playing along with my little guessing game!

Steel magnolias....

We grew peppers in OK...pretty much the same climate. They did fairly well in full sun....water daily.

We did a "pizza garden"...basil, tomotoes, oregano, sweet peppers, onions, jalapenos, and thyme.
